Charges withdrawn against Zimbo Live journalist

6 Feb, 2026

What happened

On 6 February 2026, the State withdrew charges against Zimbo Live journalist Pearlagia Mupurwa at the instance of the complainant in the matter.

Mupurwa was facing charges under the Cyber and Data Protection Act for allegedly transmitting false data messages intended to cause harm.

The charges relate to interviews she conducted with Budiriro residents who accused businessman Steven Mutumhe of forcibly taking a residential property. Mutumhe said the information was false and damaging to his character.

In a public retraction and apology, Zimbo Live unreservedly apologised for the “reputational damage, emotional distress, or inconvenience” caused by the publication and widespread circulation of the video interview.

Zimbo Live said it would strengthen its editorial processes, verification standards, and internal controls to prevent similar incidents in future.
